Eagle Valley Chapter Receives State Approval in Montrose & does some fishing along the way. Local Trout Unlimited board members Alex Schaefer and Nick Rader recently attended the annual Colorado Trout Unlimited Fall Rendezvous held this year in Montrose, Colorado on Saturday, October 3rd. The Rendezvous allows local Colorado chapters and Trout Unlimited affiliates an opportunity to join in a day of meetings, discussions, and planning on a state level with the CTU Board of Directors. It also provides an informal setting to network with other chapter members and most importantly talk trout! One of many bullet points on this year’s agenda and a large motivator for our presence in Montrose was:
“Consideration of proposed chapter boundaries for new Eagle Valley Chapter”
Following a brief and tactful presentation from Alex we received unanimous support from the room and most importantly Colorado Trout Unlimited. This was the final step in a year long process towards submission of our formal application to National TU for ultimate approval in January. Almost there everyone! Alex deserves huge thanks for his efforts over the last 12 months and now a much warranted congratulations!
Many other action items were covered throughout the day including adoption of the 2010 CTU budget. A few of the highlights from the agenda:
-
Update on Roan Plateau Litigation
-
Discussions on Fund Raising
- new / innovative ideas
- increasing chapter involvement in CTU’s Century Club
-
2010 CTU Youth Camp – planning discussion
-
Presentation from the office of Senator Mark Udall on federal issues
-
Hidden Gems Wilderness Campaign – CTU agreed to support
-
River Watch presentation from the Colorado Watershed Assembly
-
Hydropower - adoption of unified CTU stance on hydro development
-
Presentation on “I-70 SWEEP” process
- establishing a plan to mitigate watershed impact resulting from CDOT materials used for snow removal and winter operations
No road trip on behalf of Trout Unlimited is complete without studying various trout species along the way. So a one day commitment quickly turned into a 3 day road trip with sights set on the Taylor and Gunnison Rivers to bookend the CTU meetings. The truck thermometer read 17 degrees the first morning while dropping into Taylor Canyon to begin population studies below the damn. It only mildly hurt tying boots and rigs that morning. One could say the day proved to be plentiful – running down stream will sure warm up the core temperature. The Upper Gunnison trout habitat was surveyed Saturday evening on foot and again Sunday via raft. Sure is beautiful country down there. Check out some photos from the trip.
